Did you know that the veterinary profession has one of the highest suicide rates of any profession? A study in 2015 showed that 1 in 6 veterinarians had considered suicide. That fact is appalling.
I’m a veterinarian and have practiced in central PA for for over 20 years. I am more recently the founder of Heal ThySELF DVM, a business focused exclusively on improving the lives of my colleagues. I’d like to get the word out about how we can all move through hopelessness and compassion fatigue and into wellness and excitement about our work again.
I’d love the opportunity to share some ideas and strategies with your group that I’ve found useful to myself in healing and coping with the stresses of being a veterinarian. These ideas allow me to:
- stay in a much better frame of mind
- change the way I experience my day so that I do not need to de-stress, vent or otherwise heal from the events
- not be emotionally affected by my job to the point that I need coping skills daily
Some of the ideas I use are:
- Taking care of your spiritual, higher self is the root of self-care
- Using a 30,000 ft perspective to achieve a fulfilling career
- Adopting Core Beliefs to create boundaries, respect and self worth
I found a way to re-ignite my love of veterinary medicine through self discovery and a growing awareness of my own inner power. The perspectives and tools that work for me can work for my colleagues as well.
